Sail across varied seas and hand-crafted islands, battling enemies and unearthing the secrets of those that came before. The freedom of pirate life awaits in Rare’s next adventurous voyage. Steve's the owner of this very site and an active games journalist for the past ten years. He's a Canadian-Australian gay gaming geek, ice hockey player and fan. The new trailer, below, gives a better idea of what to expect from the free expansion, launching 22 June.

However, I can't guarantee this type of game will be for you, since the only form of reward you'll get are cosmetics and the cartoony pirate experience. The game is def more fun to play with friends but there's loads of discord servers and Xbox LFG posts to find a crew if you don't. It's personally one of my favorite games I've ever played but that's only because I'm fine with having fun, possibly sinking, and not getting anything big from it at the end of the session. I'd say get it on Game Pass first to see if you like it ($1 for 3 months if you're new) or wait til the game drops to $20 if you plan to Veritasdh buy it anyways. Rare envisioned Sea of Thieves to be a "game as a service" and expected it to continue receiving updates for 10 years.

Additionally, Rare announced a special showcase for A Pirate's Life coming up this Sunday, June 20, where it provide a deep dive look at the expansion. This will feature developers from Rare talking about their work on the series, while people from Disney will appear as well to discuss how the partnership came to be in the first place. The event begins at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET on June 20; keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

"Each time you're introduced to completely new locations within those regions." This can include familiar sites like Dead Man's Grotto or new ones like Sailor's Grave, a "shipwreck town" that's built for players to explore. In A Pirate's Life, the Sea also serves as a conduit between the Sea of Thieves world with Jack's Caribbean, connected by tunnels that are reminiscent of the Disney ride. There's also the Sunken Kingdom, an ocean floor location that includes, among other things, the wreckage of the Black Pearl. Mixed into all of that are the trappings of a pirate's life. A tankard for grog-drinking and a musical instrument for plinking out oceangoing tunes are permanent fixtures in your inventory. Accessorizing your look with pets, eye patches, tricorner hats, and other gear is the reward for amassing a pile of earned or stolen booty.

GenreAction-adventureModeMultiplayerSea of Thieves is a first-person action-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Microsoft Studios. In the game, players cooperate with others to explore an open world via a pirate ship. The game is described as a "shared world adventure game", which means groups of players will encounter each other regularly during their adventures, sometimes forming alliances, sometimes going head-to-head.

For Chapman, though, who really has lived his own, special kind of pirate's life since this wild game first launched in 2018, it's an important step forward. A Pirate's Life is the biggest addition to date for Sea of Thieves, in addition to being the game's very first crossover. The fact that it's also a partnership with Disney on one of the world's most well-known pirate-themed franchises is no small thing either.

Mermaid statues encrusted with gemstones appear on shore. Sunken ships that may hold pirate treasure lilt in the open sea. All of these are threats and opportunities that radically change how you chart your course, but nothing is as volatile and exciting as…the other pirates. Make or break your pirates’ code on a vast, shared sea.
